April 2^nd, 2011 was Autism Awareness Day, where people were encouraged to wear blue clothing or ribbons to spread awareness about autism spectrum disorders. The day is part of National Autism Awareness Month that runs throughout the month of April. The month is sponsored by the Autism Society, which aims to improve the lives of individuals affected by autism spectrum disorders.

One of the proven ways to improve the well being of individuals with autism is bean bag furniture because it provides important sensory stimulation. As part of Autism Awareness Month, families or organizations for individuals affected by autism should consider using bean bag furniture for everyday sensory therapy and relaxation. Bean bags can be a way for other members of the family and those with autism to play and relax together. Patrons at one Indian restaurant will get the chance to dine while sitting on bean bags, according to an article in The Hindu. Yalla! Yalla!, a restaurant located in Chennai’s Radisson Hotel, features Middle Eastern street food cuisine. Bean bag seating add to the Middle Eastern ambience, as diners are required to use such seating when enjoying such far as falafel, baklava and vegetarian mezze.

The Hindu reports that waiters dressed in enviably chic harem pants and keffiyeh scarves scuttle about while dramatically whipping heads around in time to belly dancing. Located near the hotel’s swimming pool, Yalla! Yalla! was highlighted for its hawker-style stalls and canbanas.

Yalla! Yalla! is the latest establishment to use bean bag chairs. The Hindu reported in November that the High on Caffeine Sports Cafe also has bean bag seating and is popular among college students.

Bean Bag Chairs Becoming More Popular in Classrooms

More and more schools have replaced regular chairs with bean bag chairs, according to a Journal-Sentinel article. One such school is Wisconsin’s Hartland South Elementary School, where students sit on fabric cubes and bean bags while studying.

Fifth-grade teacher Holly Albrecht says the bean bags are a hit with the kids, and the flexible seating is a step toward changing the way space is used in their classrooms. Ms. Albrecht further states that moving away from desks gives students more say about their study environment and what works for them.

Jennifer Lamar, Senior Interior Decorator for school architecture firm Fielding Nair International was noted in the article as stating that the idea to create these more flexible and comfortable spaces has really been catching on. According to Ms. Lamar, more people are realizing that spending an entire day sitting in a hard chair is not very conducive to learning.

Manilla Bulletin writer Henry Tenedero, president of the Center for Learning and Teaching Styles, stated that using bean bag chairs and throws can enhance learning for children who can concentrate in rooms containing soft furnishings.

Sydney Morning Herald writer Belinda Jackson states that the Sunset Bar located in Manilla’s Sofitel Philippine Plaza is a great place for a romantic rendezvous. The bean-bag seating placed in the middle of the landscape overlooking the ocean adds to the relaxing, romantic atmosphere, Ms. Jackson adds, noting that the bean bags–and the bar’s white lounges–are “hot property” when the sun sets.

The Sunset Bar is also a favorite for group gatherings, so it may be a good idea to arrive early to make sure you get a bean bag seat. The Sofitel is only the latest establishment to hop on the bean bag trend. Yalla!
